Globeleq’s SED strategy places a clear emphasis on health and education programmes for communities operating in or near our plants. As part of that strategy, Songas in Tanzania helps to support the 120 students and teachers at Songo Songo Secondary School:
- Supplies daily meals for students and staff
- Provides USD40 scholarships to cover stationery for students who are performing well
- Pays the salaries of part-time teachers and contributing to the costs of furniture and school infrastructure
Songas recently gave school bags to 11 students who demonstrated outstanding performance in their 2017 results. The handover event was officiated by representatives of the Globeleq board during their visit to Songo Songo Island on 23 February 2018. Globeleq’s Chief Financial Officer, Mike Scholey spoke to the students saying, “We encourage you to work hard in your studies. Don’t give up, you are the future of Songo Songo Island, Tanzania and the world.”
