Songas endeavours to make a positive difference to deliver innovative and practical solutions that go beyond financial support and to make an impactful contribution to the development of sustainable communities in its operating areas.
A strong relationship between Songas and communities in and around the power plant and gas infrastructure, is vital. With an annual community budget of USD 360,000 the company works with the communities and is implementing a range of community development initiatives which mainly address education, health, environment and livelihood concerns of local communities living along the gas pipeline corridor.

Education
Education is fundamental for sustainable economic development and growth of any community. It remains to be one of the most powerful tools for poverty reduction. Songas spends more than half of its community budget on education related projects. To ensure maximization of the impact to communities the company is implementing projects which aim at improving access to quality education to children between 3 and 18 years of age.
Working with READ International to establish libraries and train teachers in secondary schools. 7 libraries were established in Kilwa, Rufiji, Mkuranga and Ubungo districts and more than 6,000 text books donated.
More than 72 new classrooms were constructed to communities along the gas pipeline route in Kilwa, Rufiji, Kibiti, Mkuranga, Temeke, Ilala and Ubungo and more than 4,000 desks were donated.

Health
The company supports all initiatives which aims at improving access to quality basic health services. The company is working with the government and reputable non-governmental organisations in training and empowerment projects in rural areas along the wayleave.
DENTAL HEALTH
Working with Bridge2Aid to provide training support to clinical officers in Kilwa, Rufiji and Mkuranga districts to increase access to emergency oral health care to poor communities in the districts.
HIV/AID AWARENESS
Working with other specialised NGOs such as Amref, Tumaini la Maisha (TLM) and Partners for Health Services to train nurses and increase HIV/AID awareness and testing.
